“What Gets Us Bent Out of Shape and All Kinked Up”

What gets us bent out of shape? You see we can easily get all worked up over nothing. Getting worked up over nothing results in stress, anxiety, worry, anger, resentment, grudges, offenses, distractions, weariness, and exhaustion….what it all boils down to is that when we allow things in our life to steal our peace we can become all “kinked up”!
Being all kinked up is as much a physical issue as it is a spiritual issue. Chronic stress on our muscles causes small tears in the muscle tissue which creates scar tissue resulting in knots. This, left untreated will result in lack of mobility, lack of flexibility, as well as pain and stiffness. The longer it’s left untreated the more difficult it can become to reverse.
When we allow circumstances in our lives to fester and put stress on our spiritual walk we have a tendency to become calloused. What are some common things that cause you to get worked up?
For me it can be people not meeting my expectations. This could be my kids, my husband, my friends, my family, my parents, the people I work with, or even the leaders in my church. Allowing myself to get caught up in expectations sets me up for disappointment when really we should be putting our expectation s in the Lord.
Psalm 62:5 says My soul, wait you only on God; for my expectation is from him.
Another common area for us as women to get all kinked up in worrying. We worry about everything. We worry about our kids….endlessly. we worry where they are, who they are with, if they eat enough, if they are going to make good grades or not, if they are going to make the team…we worry when they are out late, and we worry when they mess up. The fact is as moms we can worry ourselves to death. We also worry about money. We worry about our husbands jobs and their safety. We worry about world issues, town issues, and weight issues.
Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Then there is anger. “Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” James 1:19 (NLT)
So when our kids act crazy…or our boss ticks us off…or the person at the light is not going cuz they are looking at their phone…slow to anger…slow to speak…
Ok…so we get disappointed…we get kinked up. We worry that kinks us up. We get angry or upset…that kinks us up. All of these things cause stress…that kinks us up. So now the question is what do we do about it…how do we prevent it…how do we overcome?
Diet and Hydration – Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Take Breaks – Find time to be alone with God
The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14
